Chapter 16

I feel the cool, comforting touch of an ocean breeze and hear the squawk of seagulls in the distance. Cautiously, I begin to lift my eyelids.

“Don’t open your eyes!” Lilith shouts urgently. “If you do, sand will get in them. Both of you keep still until after we wash your faces off.”

Someone carefully removes the makeshift mask from around the lower portion of my face before he or she begins to pour water over my eyes. With a caring touch, the person gently wipes away the sand from my eyes.

“Where did you find them?” Jered asks from somewhere off to the right of me. I presume he’s speaking to whoever rescued us.

“In one of the caves,” Malcolm answers. His voice sounds strangely muffled by something. “I’m glad I went home and got my mask and thermal goggles,” he continues. “Otherwise, I wouldn’t have found them so quickly. That storm was unlike anything I’ve ever seen, and you know how many years I lived in Egypt.”

“I’m glad you had the forethought to scout the area out this morning before we took the kids there today,” Jered says. “I know your main purpose was to look for poisonous creatures but being familiar with the terrain certainly came in handy in this instance.”

Malcolm moves around a bit behind me. “Visibility was practically zero,” Malcolm says in a much clearer voice. I assume the movement I heard was probably him taking off his mask and goggles. “At least these two had enough sense to sit tight and wait for help to come to them. If they had tried to walk through that mess, they never would have made it.”

I feel the softness of a towel dab at my eyes.

“You can open your eyes now, Lora,” Silas says from a spot right next to me. Obviously, he was the one meticulously washing the sand off my face.

Tentatively, I lift my eyelids. The first thing I see is Lilith slowly pouring water from a bottle over Kai’s face. When I look down at his chest, I see my handprint there since it stopped the sand from accumulating on that spot. A moment of embarrassment overcomes me, and I pray no one else makes note of it. As I take in our surroundings, I realize Malcolm didn’t phase us back to the academy. Instead, we’re on the large patio of Jered and Lilith’s cabin home. My home.

Considering Kai is covered in a thick layer of sand, I’m hesitant to look at the state of my wings. Lux unwinds her body from around my neck and flutters in front of me for a brief moment. Silas obviously took the time to wash the sand off her head, but her body is still covered with the orange grit. Instead of flying back into her pouch between my wings, Lux decides to fly over to Silas and curl herself around his neck. It shows a level of trust on her part that I didn’t realize she felt for Silas up until now.
